Mr. Bikram Neupane, Chairman of Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal, attended the felicitation ceremony to honor Prof. Dr. Yoshihiro Hayata in Tokyo on 15 February 2007. The ceremony was organized by High Altitude Sickness Study Committee of Japan and friends of Prof. Dr. Hayata. All well wishers of Prof. Hayata and members of Alpine Club of Japan attended the ceremony. On this occasion Mr. Bikram Neupane presented a 'Plaque of Honor and a letter of appreciation' to Prof. Dr. Hayata on behalf of HRA and spoke about HRA and Nepal.
Prof. Dr. Hayata maiden visit to Nepal was in 1973 to climb Lobuche Peak in the Khumbu region. He became aware of the high altitude sickness as a major problem while trekking in Khumbu. At that time every year trekkers and Nepalese workers used to die due to high altitude sickness. This situation inspired him to do something to save lives, so he convinced his fellows at Tokyo Medical University to make a medical post and high altitude research center in the Khumbu region. The monument of his contribution is the aid post of Himalayan Rescue Association in Pheriche built in 1975. This aid post has saved innumerable valuable life of the visitors and have contributed in making Khumbu a safe trek destination.
On this occasion Mr. Bikram Neupane met members of Japan Alpine Club and Rescue Organizations in Japan and exchanged ideas for cooperation in the near future.
