I'd like to congratulate the HRA on forty years of remarkably effective work at helping to prevent altitude sickness deaths, and in rescuing trekkers from the mountains. Coming as a volunteer doctor to Pheriche in 1979 truly changed my life, and led to a total of three volunteer seasons, and then fifteen years of working in Kathmandu. The HRA should be proud of its record as an all-volunteer organization that has supported itself through donations for these forty years. Many trekkers and local people are alive today who owe their lives to the presence of volunteer doctors in the mountains. I remain proud of the HRA and grateful to be the recipient of this plaque at the fortieth anniversary celebration. My only regret is that I couldn't be here tonight to accept it in person.
