An International Mountain Emergency Medicine Course was conducted in Nepal from May 24 to 29, 2009, which was organized by UIAA, ISMM & ICAR Medcom and Co-ordinated by Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal.
This course was directed by Dr. Hermann Brugger, Dr. Fidel Elsensohn and conducted by the faculty of Mountain Rescue Doctors from Europe & USA namely: John Ellerton , Tore Dahlberg , Herbert Forster, Tim Kovacs, Maria-Antonia Nerin, Gunther Sumann, Iztok Tomazin and Da Gambu Sherpa of Nepal.
This Mountain Emergency Rescue Medicine Course is the first of its kind and can be a first steps toward the improvement of the rescue medical training and equipment in the highest mountain kingdom of Nepal.
The training was conducted for 6 full days topics included Pre-hospital care in the remote location both theoretical and practical, Altitude related accidents, illness, trauma, helicopter rescue etc. This course is truly needed for Nepal and really necessary to run such training program in regular basis in the future.
The course was successfully completed. After the completion of the course there was a written test. All the participant were able to pass the test. The participants have the certificate which is certified by ICAR (International Commission for Alpine Rescue), UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) & ISMM (International Society of Mountain Medicine).
There were 32 participants who took this course including doctor, mountain climber, trekking guide and rescue organizers. Thanks goes to ICAR, UIAA, ISMM & Hermann Brugger, Fidel Elsensohn and all the faculty member who run this course for the first time in Nepal.
